Is timber or Colorbond fencing better for the Caboolture area?
Both work here. Colorbond needs no repainting and handles the reactive clay soil common around Caboolture and Morayfield well once footings are sized correctly. Timber suits character streets and costs less upfront but needs periodic sealing, and it moves more than steel as clay soil swells and shrinks through the wet and dry.
Can you repair a fence instead of replacing it?
Often yes. Storm damage, a single rotted post or a leaning section can usually be repaired without replacing the whole run, which is worth pricing before you commit to a full rebuild. Do gates need their own footings?
Yes. A gate post carries far more movement than a standard fence post because of the swinging load, so it is footed deeper and with more concrete than the rest of the run, whether it is a pedestrian gate or an automated driveway gate.

Do neighbours have to split the cost of a boundary fence?
Under the Neighbourhood Disputes (Dividing Fences and Trees) Act 2011 (QLD), adjoining owners generally contribute equally to a sufficient dividing fence between 0.5m and 1.8m high in prescribed materials. If you want a taller or more expensive fence than sufficient, you cover the difference yourself.
Do I need a permit to build a fence in Caboolture?
Most residential fences up to 2m above natural ground are accepted development in Queensland and do not need council approval, provided they meet siting rules. Above 2m, or where a fence sits on top of a retaining wall pushing the combined height over 2m, you need approval from a building certifier.
Do I need approval for a pool fence in QLD?
Pool barriers must meet the Queensland pool safety standard (QDC MP3.4, applying AS 1926.1) under the Building Act 1975. Compliance is confirmed by a licensed pool safety inspector, not by a DIY checklist, and a valid pool safety certificate is required before you sell or lease a property with a pool.
Do you need a licensed fence contractor in Queensland?
For paid residential fencing work valued at $3,300 or more (including labour and materials), the QBCC Act requires the contractor to hold a QBCC licence, with narrow exemptions for rural wire fencing and agricultural land. Most full boundary fence replacements exceed that threshold.
How close to the boundary can a fence be built?
A dividing fence normally sits on the surveyed boundary line itself. Confirming the actual boundary before any posts go in, rather than working from a fence line that has drifted over the years, avoids a dispute with the neighbour later.
How high can a front fence be in Queensland?
Front and side fences on corner blocks are subject to sight-line rules under the Queensland Development Code, so fencing within the truncation area near an intersection is generally kept low enough for drivers to see across. A back or side boundary fence can generally go higher, up to the general 2m accepted-development limit.
What is a sufficient dividing fence?
For Queensland residential land, a sufficient dividing fence is between 0.5m and 1.8m high and substantially built from a prescribed material such as timber palings, chain wire, metal panels, brick or a hedge. This is the standard neighbours are expected to contribute to equally.
What happens if my neighbour won't pay their share of the fence?
The formal path is a notice to contribute: an approved form naming the land, the fence line, the work and the estimated cost, with at least one written quote attached. If there is no agreement within one month, either owner can apply to QCAT within two months of the notice.
Can I build my own fence without a licence?
A land owner can build their own non-pool fence without a QBCC licence where the work is self-assessable or exempt development under the Building Act 1975, or where the value is under $11,000, or under an owner-builder permit. Pool barrier work has its own separate certification requirements.
Is rural or wire fencing exempt from QBCC licensing?
Any fence on genuinely agricultural or pastoral land is exempt from QBCC licensing regardless of value, and a fence with no concrete footing, made of posts, pickets or stakes joined by wire strands, is separately excluded building work under the QBCC Regulation. That covers most strained-wire boundary fencing around Wamuran, Woodford and Elimbah, but we check the exemption against your job rather than assuming it.
How long does a pool safety certificate last?
In Queensland, a pool safety certificate issued by a licensed pool safety inspector is valid for 2 years on a non-shared pool and 1 year on a shared pool, and one is required whenever you sell or lease a property with a pool.

What is the non-climbable zone for a pool fence?
The non-climbable zone (NCZ) is the 900mm arc around a pool barrier that must be free of anything a child could use to climb over, such as furniture, pot plants or low tree branches. It is one of the checks a licensed pool safety inspector makes when certifying a barrier.
